Barry S. Slevin

Principal

Barry S. Slevin's legal work is distinguished by the holistic approach he brings to representing clients. Only after analyzing all the factors likely to bear on a particular matter – legal, practical, litigation and policy – does he advise clients on a recommended course of action.

Mr. Slevin's broad-ranging expertise includes all aspects of employee benefits law, including ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code and related laws. He counsels employee benefit plans and litigates cases involving employee benefit issues. The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), the government insurance agency created by ERISA, has retained him as one of the few private counsel representing the government in litigating employee benefit cases.

He has litigated numerous cases throughout the United States involving the fiduciary responsibility provisions of ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code’s application to employee benefit plans, withdrawal liability owed to multiemployer plans, and reversion of pension plan assets to employers. He also has represented numerous employee benefit plans and fiduciaries in the context of Department of Labor investigations and lawsuits.

A Charter Fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel, Mr. Slevin is also a member of the Employee Benefits Committee of the American Bar Association and a former member of the Attorneys Committee of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. Among other achievements, he has served as co-chairman of the Subcommittee on the PBGC and Plan Termination of the American Bar Association Employee Benefits Committee, a member of the Termination Committee of the Association of Private Pension and Welfare Plans, and a member of the Working Committee of the National Coordinating Committee for Multiemployer Plans. Mr. Slevin was recognized as a Super Lawyer for Employee Benefits/ERISA law in the publication, "Washington, D.C. Super Lawyers" for 2007, 2008 and again in 2009.

Mr. Slevin has testified before Congress on pending pension and health plan legislation. He is frequently invited to speak before panels of professional organizations, including American Bar Association seminars and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, and has lectured at Georgetown University and the American University School of Law. He is author of numerous articles in the employee benefits field.

Mr. Slevin graduated cum laude from Syracuse University and Brooklyn Law School, where he was a member of the Brooklyn Law Review. Mr. Slevin was formerly Special Counsel in the Office of General Counsel of the PBGC, where he handled major complex litigation of first impression arising under ERISA.

Mr. Slevin is admitted to practice in California, the District of Columbia, Florida and New York. He is admitted to practice before a number of United States District Courts and Courts of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
